Presentation Supreme Audit Office - eTranslation from the perspective of a long-term user, Jeroným's Days of the Union of Interpreters and Translators

Prague, 6 November 2020

Every year at the beginning of November, the Union of Translators and Interpreters organises the Jeroným's Days, during which it informs the interpreting and translation community about new and interesting developments in the field of translatology. At this year's event, the European Commission's eTranslation language translator was introduced. This tool was introduced by the International Relations Department to the staff of the Supreme Audit Office (SAO) in June 2020 and recommended to be used for quick translation of audit conclusions of the European Supreme Audit Institutions.

As the SAO had already had experience with the use of eTranslation, the organisers of Jeroným’s Days asked if someone from the SAO staff could present the practical aspects of using eTranslation to the interpreting and translation community. Representatives of the Department of International Relations have therefore prepared a session for this year's event called Introducing eTranslation - or the European Commission's translation "machine".

The aim of the presentation was to present and summarise the experience of using the eTranslation tool at the SAO in the long term. The presentation also focused on how we communicate about the translator internally within the SAO and how we use it for international cooperation, e.g. in the EUROSAI audit database or BIEP. Errors and inaccuracies in translations produced by eTranslation were also discussed.
