European auditors discussed in Prague about possible global threats

Press Release on the EUROSAI meeting in Prague, 22 and 23 January 2024

Is it possible to learn from previous crises, for example from the COVID crisis, in auditing? Auditors from all over Europe discussed this as well as other topics, on Monday and Tuesday, 22 and 23 January 2024, at the new headquarters of the Supreme Audit Office (SAO) in Prague. The international meeting of the European Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions (EUROSAI) was organised by the SAO in cooperation with the National Audit Office (NAO) of the United Kingdom.

More than 50 participants discussed potential global threats such as disease pandemics, natural and other climate change-related disasters, and cyber-attacks. Among other things, they also discussed how to process these threats in audit practice.

The aim of the meeting was not only to share information from the audit practice of individual states, for example during the COVID-19 pandemic, but also to transform the previous EUROSAI Project Group ‘COVID-19’ into a group with a broader focus on possible risks and threats called ‘Resilience & Preparedness’.

In addition to the auditors and heads of the two organising institutions, Miloslav Kala and Gareth Davies, the meeting was attended by Professor Jan Pavel, a member of the Czech Fiscal Council, Head Epidemiologist Petr Smejkal from IKEM, and Lt. Col. Martin Hlaváček from the Communication and Information Systems Agency of the Czech Armed Forces.

The event was also joined by the employees of the Archive of the Chamber of Deputies who in the main lobby of the SAO headquarters held an exhibition of historical materials related to epidemic measures, natural disasters and catastrophes that befell mankind in the past.
